High Altitude Wind Machines Could Power NY - From Wired.Com

The wind blowing through the streets of Manhattan couldn’t power the city, but wind machines placed thousands of feet above the city theoretically could.

The first rigorous, worldwide study of high-altitude wind power estimates that there is enough wind energy at altitudes of about 1,600 to 40,000 feet to meet global electricity demand a hundred times over.

The very best ground-based wind sites have a wind-power density of less than 1 kilowatt per square meter of area swept. Up near the jet stream above New York, the wind power density can reach 16 kilowatts per square meter. The air up there is a vast potential reservoir of energy, if its intermittency can be overcome.

Next Indiana Jones Moving Forward

In an interview with BBC News, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen star Shia LaBeouf says that it looks like a follow-up to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is moving forward.

"Steven [Spielberg] just said that he cracked the story on it before I left and I think they're gearing that up," LaBeouf said. Last summer's blockbuster was made for about $185 million and earned $786.6 million worldwide. It was the second-highest earner of 2008, behind just The Dark Knight.

True Blood Season 2 Premieres Tonight

HBO's sexy vampire bloodfest returns for its second season tonight. A lot of you are still catching up on the first season, so I won't recap the first season. As expected, HBO has promised more sex and more violence...we demand it.

Below is the second season teaser that featured the new Bob Dylan track, "Beyond Here Lies Nothing".

The Hangover - $105 Million In Ten Days

The Hangover took #1 again at the box office this weekend, bringing the ten day total to $105 million. The laugh-a-second comedy only dropped 26% in its second weekend. My buddy Joel and I caught a test screening of it earlier this year; we called it back then, saying that everyone would be quoting this one until Christmas.

If you haven't seen it yet, make it a priority. I haven't been in a theater that laughed that hard in a long time.

Stephen Sommers Fired From GI Joe - Rumor Via FilmDrunk

After a test screening wherein the film tested the lowest score ever from an audience in the history of Paramount, the executive who pushed for the movie, Brad Weston, had Stephen Sommers, the super hack director fired. Removed. Locked out of the editing room.

Stuart Baird, a renowned “fixer” editor was brought it to try to see if it could be made releasable. Meanwhile producer Lorenzo [di Bonaventura] whose turkey IMAGINE THAT explodes this weekend as the new bomb in theatres (also championed by Weston) was told his services were no longer needed on the film either.

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner, who turned down other offers from the property to go with the script that was rushed in 8 weeks by Stuart Beattie because of the writer’s strike is frantic that this will destroy the brand and is distancing himself from the pending catastrophe.

NONE of this needed to happen, except someone who did not know the mythology, Lorenzo was in charge of the film and never contradicted Sommers on anything. Lorenzo, was Chairman of Warners and had GI JOE under option there (not as a producer) for SEVEN years and he refused to greenlight the film, stating that because he grew up in Italy he had no knowledge of it. If you google enough, at one point you will see he wanted the film to be about an action hero named MANN (Action Man, get it) and he clearly had no clue what the GI Joe world really was.

Happy 25th Birthday, Tetris!

Tetris, the beloved (and epic) puzzle game, turns 25 years old today. In 1984, Russian mathematician Alexey Pajitnov was playing with one of his favorite puzzles when he had an inspiration: How about creating a computer version?

Pajitnov wrote the program in his spare time, simplifying the idea to make it easier for those of us who aren't math geniuses. He used shapes made of four squares -- hence "Tetris," which comes from "tetra," the Greek word for "four."

In the game, players must position and stack blocky shapes to fill a grid without leaving spaces in between. Successfully completed sections disappear. The more sections the player completes without reaching the top, the better the score.

To date, Tetris has sold 125 million copies. You read that right.

Scorcese's 'Shutter Island'

Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, 'Shutter Island' is the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island's fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.

Although not expected to drop at the Worldwide Developers Conference, MAC is hinting that this sweet baby could be available by 2010. Personally, I wouldn't hold my breath, but with the advances in mobile processors a Touchscreen Tablet could be a possibility in the near future.
